Ben Kopilow’s talk had a strong focus on the business behind the photography. And whilst the business side doesn’t particularly interest me it is something I may need to consider more thoroughly. I found his process very eye opening especially the way he prices his packages.

Hidden Costs Per Wedding
- Advertisement/ Marketing: $10, 00 per year / 50 weddings = $200 per wedding
- Camera Wear: 150, 000 Shutter Clicks / 2 000 images per wedding = 75
$7000 / 75 = $100
- Consolation/Correspondance time 4 @ $100 $400
- Misc Management time = $400
- Electricity/Storage/Back Up/Computer Wear $100
- Insurance/Liability/Tax/Travel – 10, 000/ 50 = $200
- Business Bottom Line = $1500
Work Harder Not Smarter
- 2007 – 55 @ $3,000 - $198,000
- 2008 – 50 @ $4,200 – $210,000
- 2009 – 45 @ $5,000 - $225,000
Better Clientele at Top End
- The cheaper you are the more clients want for free
Working out a price list
- What is my bottom line - $1,500 – Equipment Costs etc
- What am I willing to sacrifice my weekend for
- $5,000 minimum
- If you have a range of packages but don’t want everyone booking the lowest fee have a minimum
Fusion Packages
- $2500 – Staff Photographer
- $3500 – Staff Photographer (Off Season)
- $5700 – w/ Basic Album (Negs extra)
- $8500 – Most Profitable (Negs extra)
- $12950 – Includes Negatives
- Don’t rely on expensive reprints
- Many clients spend another 50% or more on a unique album
- Eg. $2,500 client purchased a $4,500 album
- Can’t sell what you don’t have – make sample album
- Sell the album first
- Don’t limit what the client can buy
- Educate the client beforehand re cost
- Quote album cost per page no set price
- Have little ‘extras’ in camera bag eg. Lollies, scissors, know how to tie ties
- Go the extra mile
- Sell yourself but don’t talk about you
- Create your own style, stand out from the crowd - unique
