I require some portraits of eight of my staff members so that the company can use them for printing in various documents including the staff magazine, company brochures, letterheads and business cards. I would like them on a DVD please.
I would like one casual portrait and one formal portrait of the eight staff members and also one formal group shot.

CONTRACT

AGREEMENT Overview: This Agreement expresses the full and complete agreement between the named client and TST PHOTOGRAPHY. It supersedes all prior agreements. The only way to add or change this agreement is to do so in writing, signed by all parties.

COOPERATION: The CLIENT agrees that good faith cooperation and communication between them is important in obtaining a good result. TST PHOTOGRAPHY is not responsible if key individuals fail to appear or cooperate during photography, or for missed images due to details not revealed to TST PHOTOGRAPHY or beyond the photographers’ control.

IMAGES and COPYRIGHTS: Photographs/images produced by TST PHOTOGRAPHY are protected by Federal Copyright Law (all rights reserved). Upon final payment by CLIENT, CLIENT is granted limited license to use and display resulting images for the agreed use. The CLIENT must obtain written permission from, and compensate TST PHOTOGRAPHY prior to the CLIENT or its associates publishing or selling the photographs in forms other than that agreed upon.

MODEL RELEASE. The CLIENT hereby grants to TST PHOTOGRAPHY the irrevocable and unrestricted right to use and publish the photographs for editorial, trade and advertising purposes in any manner or medium.

RETAINER & PAYMENT SCHEDULE: A $500 fee is due at the signing of this agreement. This is a NON-REFUNDABLE RETAINER. Should CLIENT cancel or otherwise breach this Agreement, the NON-REFUNDABLE RETAINER shall be liquidated for damages to TST PHOTOGRAPHY. The CLIENT shall also be responsible for payment of any materials/charges incurred up to time of cancellation. Otherwise, the retainer shall be applied towards the Final Total, with the remainder of charges payable in full, four weeks prior to the date of the photo shoot.

LIMIT OF LIABILITY: TST PHOTOGRAPHY takes the utmost care with respect to exposure, storage, and processing the photographs/images, but cannot and does not, guarantee that photographs/images from the photo shoot will not be lost, stolen, or destroyed for reasons within or beyond TST PHOTOGRAPHY control. CLIENT agrees that TST PHOTOGRAPHY’s full and complete responsibility and liability is limited to the return of all payments received for the photo shoot.

COMPLETION SCHEDULE: Creation of the CD/DVD containing the required images is expected within 4 weeks after the photo shoot. Printed items may require additional time.

SUMMARY


To conclude, as a group we found this assignment very practical and relevant to further our understanding of a professional standard brief. We approached this task firstly by gathering the required information in terms of cost figures in order to create an accurate quote.

Our company name is developed from the first letters of our first names to create a simple yet appropriate business name.

The AIPP website was our greatest source of information. This is because it is relevant to an Australian business and we know the information will be reliable and accurate. The majority of the costs found in our quote have been taken from the AIPP website such as expenses, wages and hourly rates used for the TST business as well image processing and location costs.

The lighting costs were located from a website for a lighting hire and sales business called Studio Works Corp and can be found in our bibliography. This website had detailed information on the costs to buy as well as hire a variety of different flash lighting equipment and allowed us to obtain an accurate equipment costs for our quote.

We also drafted an overview of the total expenses a business may encounter over a 12 month period.
Although this was not a requirement it did allow help us to understand better the costs to run a business and therefore how to charge a client appropriately.

We sourced a quote for Public Liability Insurance from Liability Brokers Pty Ltd which we used to make our own quote.

The quote was developed from recent experience in our location class at CIT. In this class we have been learning about corporate shoots and applied this learned knowledge to this assignment. It is a very common request for businesses to require corporate photographs of their staff members for business cards, newsletters and brochures to promote the company. This is the basis for what the client will require from our business.

In the emails between the client and business the requirements were discussed and then the quote was written accordingly. In the email we quoted the total costs and the client can also find a detailed breakdown of costs in the quote.

The model release forms we found from the RMIT website which is again another reliable source with knowledge of the industry. The basis for the contract was again found from the AIPP website. We have aimed to develop a concise contract that is worded in understandable terms for the client.

Our aim was to develop a detailed brief that was clear and easily understood.

Unfortunately I missed this weeks class due to illness but got a copy of a classmates notes.

Caroline Webber is from the National Archives of Australia and she gave a talk on the role of photography in The Archives. We did have an excursion to the archives for History of Photography and i enjoyed having a look at what they do especially the old film photographs. Photography plays such an important role in remembering our history.

- There are arounf 3 million images in the Archives
- Each year the hold exhibitions some are perminent, others temorary or touring.

Leonie has a consistant, comfortable style that suits beautifully family portraiture. I really enjoyed hearing from her as she took us around her property. She has the most beautiful props and sets scattered around that she has collected over the years. The atmoshphere she has created is a personal secluded location where families can just be themselves.


She owns and runs her own business from home and I can really see the benefits of this, possible something to think about in the future! I really admire the unique set up she has and feel very privleged that she shared it with us.

Ben Kopilow came and spoke with us on a second occasion. This time not to speack about his wedding photography business but of his stock photography business which is still under the same name of Fushion Photography.

Stock Photography is basically photographs that can be bought for different creative uses instead of hiring out a photographer. Ben has a website in which you can search for particular photographs and then buy them.

Ben spoke of the Pros and Cons of stock photography. The pros include;
- Not having to deal with difficult clients
- More freedom in what you choose to shoot

Cons Include
- No set income (not good for main source of business/income)
- Can have bad agents that take most of sales
- Must be updated regularly (always taking photos)

Most Photographers do not use stock photography as main sourse of income they often have other businesses/jobs but stock photography can provide a relatively easy source of extra cash inflow

Licencing Models
- Small cost downloads can be good if selling photos in a large volume
- Royalty free is usually based on the resolution the client wants approx $50-500
-Rights are managed on usage often higher returns but less sales.

The task for assignment 2 is in small groups we are required to research and area of photography. My group, consisting of Tess, Sue and myself, looked at portraiture and the difference between domestic and commercial. What I found interesting is that there really is no specific career path for a photographer to take. There is such a variety of ways that you can get into the business. Some study where others just have a passion and go for it! Below is our findings.



Careers in Photography
Portraiture (commercial + domestic)

Intro
A portrait is an artistic representation of a person or group of people where the focus is predominately on the face as well as the expression. Photographic portraits can range from a family snapshot to a carefully composed image. A portrait can often allow the viewer an insight into the subject’s mood or personality.


Definition
The use of a portrait can range from domestic to commercial use. Domestic photography is usually intended for private use and viewing. This is most commonly seen as family portraits but also includes weddings and other special occasions. These images can be produced professionally or often vernacularly.


Commercial photography differs to domestic photography where the intent is for the photographs to be publicly displayed for a wider audience. This can vary from editorial and advertising to company portraits and other promotional portraits. These photographs are usually taken professionally with the purpose to promote or advertise a business, product or person.


Career path
- There are many ways to become a Portrait photographer and they range from:
- studying photography at university, tafe or through a private organisation
- studying another profession and making a decision to move into photography
- starting with a hobby that slowly starts to earn you money until it becomes a full time profession.


Educational Requirements
- Every state in Australia has courses on photography and they can be run by government or private organisations.
- Some organisations may specialise in a particular genre such as photojournalism or advertising however they are usually very general.
- The type of qualification the organisation delivers is varied from a nationally recognised qualification such as a Degree or certificate to something that is a certificate delivered by a private organisation that no one recognises accept the body issuing it.
- Courses can be completed full time, part time or by correspondence.
- Fees vary depending on the organisation with Universities being the dearest.
- A directory of Photography courses can be found in Australian Photographer August 2010.
- They list 50 organisations that offer photography courses.


Way of finding work
There are many different methods that portrait photographers may market themselves or their business to find work. This includes online marketing such as; websites, blogging and other forms of social media and networking such as facebook, twitter and other online profiles. Other forms of marketing include promotional flyers, business cards, photographic awards, portfolios, publications, yellow pages, advertisements, markets, and especially word of mouth.


Pay ranges
- Varies greatly depending on experience, notoriety, subjects, where the images will be presented.
- Domestic portrait photographers tend to charge an upfront sitting fee and then the client pays an additional price for each print they want.
- Commercial portrait photographers usually present the client with a total cost of the job upfront. This fee generally covers: time spent on shoot, time spent editing, output costs (eg. Printing), copyright usage, travel time.

This week we went on a Sydney trip to visit some galleries, studios and talk to some industry photographers. This trip was extremely beneficial as it gave us a bit of an inside view into the workplace and some well established studios.

GM Photographics was started by Graham Monro. He is a high end photographer with a focus on weddings but also does family portraits, pregnancy, newborn, commercial and some fine art. It was a good experience to hear about the business side of things as well as how they show the photos to clients. Graham was very passionate about his work and spoke with enthusiasm. He seems to be not only a great photographer but a smart business man and has a good team behind him.

I really enjoyed seeing the studio ownded by Studio Commercial. They had a lovely old building that was set up as an office space teamed with a studio that can also make use of the large windows running along the sides of the building to shoot with natural light. There workspace appears to very versitle. The photographers at Studio Commercial all seemed relatively young but spoke with enthusiasm and knowledge.

The last place we visited was Sun Studios. Sun Studios absolutely blew me away. I was very impressed with the way the place was run, the studios and the equipment that they offer. The facilities they have are extremely good quality and they obviously take a lot of pride in what they do. They run there business with a lot of bride and proffesionalism and in doing so create an amazing and infectious atmosphere. Maybe one day I will be able to use the studios myself!!!

Gavin Blue spoke with us on two occasions. He seems to be very experienced and with a wealth of information which he spoke very passionate about. I enjoyed in particular the demonstration he gave in which he had very speedlights set up around the room and demonstrated the difference between using one then adding another and another until there was about 5 speedlights! I found this to helped to gain a better technical understanding visually. I also was very impressed with the control in which he uses flash in his photographs to create dramatic portraits.

Shooting w/ Speedlights

- He uses – Nikon Flash SB900
- Positives – Fast, Light, In-obtrusive, high speed sync, can use in small space, cheaper, no leads.
- Negatives – Line of sight needed to trigger
- ACOCP – Australian Community of Child Photography
- Slow shutter 1/15th of a second with flash – where ever the flash hits is in focus everywhere else is blurred (no tripod)
